Laura Fries of Variety was critical of the film, writing that director Stuart Gillard "misses a prime opportunity to present a poignant and entertaining multicultural alternative to the usual holiday viewing". She wrote that Gillard "lays the groundwork for a meaningful drama but inconsistently intersperses fantasy elements and slapstick comedy".

The difference between this movie and Uncut Gems is that one is a brilliant masterpiece about down-on-his-luck Jew who befriends a professional basketball player choosing to pursue his dreams against all odds and the world crumbling around him, and the other movie is Uncut Gems.
A group of Jewish kids find themselves fascinated after seeing a black man. A very poor movie ensures. It highlights the Jewish community which is largely underrepresented and has a nice story!
