When he reached his teens whilst studying commercial arts in college, he took his first foray into music by forming a folk duo, The Ramblers Two, with a fellow student called Michael Crotty. The pair toured various folk clubs in both Ireland and England during the mid-sixties, however they eventually went their separate ways, with Johnny admitting he wanted to try and make it alone.

Inagainst his parents wishes, Johnny quit his job in advertising to try and become a full time entertainer. Later that year his big break came after he recorded a song called Muirsheen Durkinan old ballad from the west of Ireland. It topped the charts at number one for three consecutive weeks. His second number one, The Boston Burglar, quickly followed and he found himself playing as a support act to an up and coming band at the time, The Rolling Stones.

For the very first time, he witnessed the mobbing and screaming of fans as the Stones ran for the back door and their getaway car. He had come a long way from the early years where the tough slog saw him perform to practically empty ballrooms and pubs, and his first tour of the United States followed a year later in Mayo, came the inspiration to write his first song Long Before Your Time.

The couple met in Grafton Street in Marchwhile Odette was working as a hairdresser. To stay occupied, he wrote a songbook that became the marvellous My Songs, My Stories, My Life In Musicrecounting the songs he has sung over the years, both his own compositions and covers.
