When At Home in Mitford debuted init launched a bestselling book series and a new career for first-time author and North Carolina native Jan Karon. Now, more than 20 years later, it's getting the movie treatment it deserves, thanks to the Hallmark Channel and star-slash-co-executive producer Andie MacDowell.
PS Same for The Narnia movies…. Where was Gregory Harrison when Father Tim was being cast? Or maybe James Brolin? Cameron Mathison is probably my favorite Hallmark leading man, but he was NOT the right choice for this one. I have read all the Mitford books and lived them. I was skeptical that At Home could be squished into 2 hours minus commercial breaks.
Then putting the focus on Cynthia from the first shot moves the story in a totally other direction. The town is too big, totally not what is described in the book; Father Tim is too young, etc etc. I wonder how Jan Karon felt about this adaptation? My husband and I just watched this movie today, At Home in Mitford. You stated everything exactly as We thought.
They used the names but altered the story line and focus. Agree, instead of focus on Father Tim, it was on Cynthia. Making Fathers character so much younger missed the uniqueness of their relationship. Casting was terrible for these characters! I love the Mitford series. This was an absolutely awful version. Sorry so late to the party. Just saw a commercial about this movie and was bummed.
I absolutely can see that the physical traits, age, voices, etc would be perfect casting. Unbelievably bad casting! Andy McDowell is 10 years older than Cameron Mathison. Ok maybe Cynthia had curly hair? The age was one of the things that I really disliked about the movie. I am glad that I am not alone in preferring the Mitford books over the movie.
Hated the movie! Totally missed the feeling and charm of the book. Missing the charm is a great way to put it. The Mitford books have a charm that was lost in the movie. I read the entire Mitford series years ago and absolutely loved it! I thought this was from the same series based on the title, but I had to look up info on the movie to find out as it was so at home in mitford movie sequel than I remembered.
Very disappointing Hallmark that you changed so many things! I know! They changed the Mitford books so much. I am glad that I am not alone in thinking that the books are so much better. The movie totally lost the charm of the books. It was hard to separate the movie from the humor and reality of Jan Karons wonderful story and depth of many unique characters.
I was flipping through channels and saw At Home in Mitford on Hallmark. I had read some of the Mitford books years ago and just finished listening to the Focus on the Family Radio Theatre dramatic adaptation. I watched the movie for less than 5 minutes. The aging Father Tim who struggles with his weight and diabetes was unrecognizable when played by Cameron Mathison.
They guy who played the realtor would have been a better Father Tim. My advice—stick with the books. They absolutely ruined a beautiful story! I had read 6 of the Mitford books and loved them. Don't bother Remember to good Hallmark movies? This is not one of them! Finally watched it on YouTube. Please don't use that screenwriter, casting director, etc.
I am on Jan Karon's FB page and never knew this movie was going to be made. She must have given up all rights to casting. I would have donated money to a kickstarter account to make the movie the way she wanted. If anyone in the entertainment business read AARP Magazine, they would know that many of us want movies with mature actors. Not Cameron Matheson as Father Tim.
Not even close. What a shame. Loved it. I could not even finish the first half hour. It was just a "boy meets Andie" movie that we've seen before in Cedar Cove. Andie, Andie, Andie, you should have let Ms. Karon have more say. She created multi-dimensional, vulnerable, redemptive characters. Y'all didn't even come close. Greatly disappointed. I Loved This Movie.
I have read the Mitford series, and think Hallmark got the major points of this story right. I think Hallmark did a great of making a nice adaption of Jan Karon's book. Ig you are book purist this movie was a disappointment. Whoever would have made this movie, would have had angry fans. The filmmakers do not have the abilities to get into each fan's head.
This book and movie are to different beings and not the same. I feel the film did a great job with the spirit of mitford. Congratulations for a job well done. Did the screen writers even try reading the book first? The book was wonderful, full of quirky characters including Father Tim and Cynthia. I saw nothing of the book's characters in the movie, that I could even remotely identify the way Jan Karon magically painted them in her book.
A travesty. Did Jan Karon agree to this? The story has been watered down and fluffed. I don't get it. The actors are all wrong, and the dialogue is silly. This is total Hallmark and not at all Karon. How did this happen? These excellent books deserve so much better screen writing and acting. This is so disappointing. Loved this movie. I loved the Mitford books and I really enjoyed this movie.
Took me right back to Mitford. Casting was great Thank you Hallmark. Please make more of Jan Karon's books into movies. Chris Shields Dr. Dolores Drake Mrs. Kehli O'Byrne Sally Morgan.
